Overnighters

XÁ:YTEM Longhouse Cultural Overnight Experience

DAY 1: AFTERNOON

3:30/4:00

  • Students arrive at XÁ:YTEM Longhouse
  • Students are assembled inside on the Longhouse benches.
  • An introduction to the site 
  • Short walk to the Transformer Stone , also known as “Hatzic Rock”.
  • The legend of Mt.Cheam and Dog Mountain.
  • Short walk from the :Rock” to the archaeological site of the 5,000 -6,000 year old house.
  • Scientific / archaeological significance of artifacts found during the excavation

Back to the Longhouse. Short juice/snack break and question period outside under the shelter.

4:45

  • Hands on activity program relating to traditional Sto:lo technology.
  • The activity program includes lecture, demonstrations, examination of materials, tools, and artifacts.
  • This includes Salish weaving, cedar bark “rope” making and “adzing with a reproduction of a traditional “D” adze.

5:45

  • Free time before Salmon Barbecue
  • Students may begin working on their journals/ worksheets, or sketch “The Rock”.

6:00

  • SUPPER
  • Salmon Barbecue and hot dogs for those who don’t eat fish

6:39

  • Drumming and Singing

7:00

  • Short video on harvesting cedar bark.
  • Short lecture/demonstration on processing cedar bark.
  • Students make a small inner cedar bark mat.

8:00

  • Students prepare individual deerhide rattles

9:00

  • Snack(cheese and crackers, fruit, juice etc.)
  • Campfire if weather permits
  • Journal writing

9:30

  • Story / Legend

10:00

  • Lights Out!

DAY 2: MORNING

7:30

  • Wake up call.
  • Get dressed, brush teeth, etc.
  • Pack Gear…

GEAR MUST BE PACKED BEFORE BREAKFAST

8:00

  • Breakfast ( Bannock, muffins, fruit and juice)

8:30

  • Journals/worksheets

9:00

  • Archaeology tour begins.
  • Classes will be split into two groups.
  • One group will proceed to the archaeology sifters and will sift for artifacts.
  • One group will remain in the Longhouse for the archaeology hands on toll technology and lab.

6:30

  • Snack break outside under covered area.

10:00

  • Groups will switch.

10:30-12:00

  • Complete deerhide ratles.

12:00

  • LUNCH (Hamburger and Hot Dog Barbecue and juice)

12:30-1:00

  • Question period and departure

Note: We are able to make adaptations to the program (both in lecture and hands on) to suit the needs of your group. Please call if you have any questions or concerns.

THE COST OF THIS TOUR IS $140.00 PER STUDENT BASED ON A 30 STUDENT MINIMUM.

School/Students are responsible for:

  • Transportation to and from the site
  • Sleeping bag, pillow, mat or foamy
  • Personal hygiene supplies
  • Journals/notebooks and pen/pencil
  • Special diet requirements

Group leaders will be expected to have identified any medical/health problems of all participants and have a plan of action in place in case of emergencies.

Xa:ytem Longhouse Interpretive Centre is responsible for:

  • Meals and preparation
  • Staff will provide all inservice
  • All material for projects
  • Use of Longhouse and staff
  • Workshops
